The Modernism movement started between the last decade of 19th century and the first one of 20th. It’s a style that changed the esthetic that was in the architecture at the moment with subjects inspired from nature with organic forms. The important city of Valencia in Spain joined that movement quite early.
This city stands out in this style thanks to the well known architect Gaudi. His designs are a perfect example of this movement. The organic forms, flowers and animals are always present in the buildings.
Some of the characteristics of these buildings are: The decoration is always part of the object and structure, never added to it, no symmetry or regularity and undulations and organic forms are always present.
Gaudi is not the only modern architect that left his print in Valencia; there is also work from Javier Goerlich, Francisco Mora, Alejandro Soler, among others. Buildings like City Hall, the Xapa House, the North Railroad Station, The Post Office, and the Dragon House are great examples of this architecture.
Valencia still has intact modernist buildings that make a huge contrast with the futuristic architecture that is being built in recent years. That’s what makes the architecture of Valencia so interesting to look at.
